Bansko, Bulgaria 🇧🇬

Verified Digital Nomad Trip Report 📄

What is Bansko, Bulgaria like for Digital Nomads?

Find out in this Digital Nomad Trip Report covering a month in the Bulgarian mountain town made infamous by Bansko Nomad Fest!

📆 Time Spent

1 Month

👥 Traveling As

Couple - Without Pets

📍 Location / Area

Gondola

🏡 Accommodation

1-bedroom apartment (Airbnb)

🌐 Internet / Working

  • Co-working is widely available with Coworking Bansko & Altspace Coworking

  • There was a handful of laptop friendly cafe's too if you prefer! ☕

  • Apartment clocked 70mbps, too 🧡

🗣️ Language: Bulgarian

  • Trying to speak Bulgarian was fun... and you'll get big smiles from locals when you try...but thankfully English is widely spoken!

  • As a native english speaker, I found Bulgarian quite difficult.

  • They use characters from the greek alphabet, so if you’re familiar with those, you may find it easier.

🌤️ Weather

In summer, during nomad fest we experienced…

  • Beautiful mornings with warm walks and fresh air.

  • A little too warm in the middle of the day

  • Stunning sunsets over the mountains 👀

Bansko is also a popular winter resort for enjoying skiing & snowboarding.

Things to do

  • Walk / hike / mountain bike / plenty of things in nature!

  • The nomad community there is very active, too with regularly organised football & volleyball.

  • There's tennis & basketball courts, and a calisthenics park.

📈 Best things

  • Sunday Market - fresh fruit, veg, and local honey all available

  • The super chilled street dogs!

  • Bansko Nomad Fest!

  • Lots of hotels with pools and spa facilities where you can pay for day-access for $5-10

  • Community. Literally nomads all over town & whatsapp groups for different activities & interests.

📉 Worst things

  • Town is kind of split - lots at the top (gondola area) and bottom (around the town) but it's a fair walk between them.

  • In summer, opening hours of business is a bit hit 'n' miss. Ignore opening times on signage. It'll be wrong 99% of the time.

Anything Else?

Getting a bicycle would be a good idea here, especially if you're staying at the Gondola end, as the town's 'big' supermarket is at the bottom of the hill.

There are lots of other smaller local supermarkets, but they don't always have everything you want, and they can be a little expensive.

There's a 20% resident discount available in these smaller supermarkets, and If you're lucky they'll apply it for you no questions asked!

A whole community of nomads, ready to meet you.

There really is a plug & play community in Bansko - it’s up there with the likes of Bali and Chiang Mai - even though it’s a much smaller place

Hiking, sports and other activities are almost always happening.

And if you like pastry, make sure you visit ‘le petit nicolas’ 🥐

Amazing options for traditional (very tasty) meals

My favourite thing: waking up surrounded by nature & mountains

✅ Go here if…

  • You like nature and being active

  • You like a bustling social scene and meeting other nomads

  • You don't mind the small town vibe.

❌ Avoid here if…

  • You need the buzz of the big city

  • You want places to be open at all hours

  • You don't want to meet other nomads
