👥 Traveling As

Couple - Without Pets

📍 Location / Area

Sé (Old Town Funchal)

🏡 Accommodation

Studio Apartment (Airbnb)

🌐 Internet / Working

  • The internet connection was great

  • The apartment we had wasn't fully set up for working but we went to Cowork Funchal

🗣️ Language: English & Portuguese

  • We used English and it was completely fine!

  • Madeirans are used to tourists so anyone working in service and hospitality speak great English.

🌤️ Weather

  • It depends on the time of year but overall it's great!

  • In the winter it gets to 15-18 degrees Celcius and in the summer it gets to 25-30 degrees Celcius

  • Madeira is known for its microclimates so it can be rainy and windy in one part while sunny in another!

🎟️ Public Transport & Infrastructure

  • If you're staying in Old Town Funchal it's super easy to get around by foot. However, there are also buses and Bolt that are very easy to navigate.

  • If you're in the Lido area, you can also take buses and Bolt.

  • If you're in other parts of the island, the easiest option is to rent a car but it is still possible to get around by using public transport!

Things to do

  • Hiking is the most popular activity in Madeira 🥾

  • You can also go on boat tours to see dolphins and whales 🐬

  • Nomads tend to love Purple Friday parties in Ponta do Sol, however, we prefer to join the Saturday morning workouts with Madeira Friends International Community Association

📈 Best things

Our favourite things about Madeira are:

  • The diverse nature – it's absolutely breathtaking!

  • The people who are so warm and welcoming

  • The weather! Especially during winter time when the rest of Europe is cold

📉 Worst things

  • You may feel isolated after a while since you're far from everything

  • The public transport around the island could be improved

  • The roads are steep and windy (except for the highway which is great)

Anything Else?

We really love Madeira and it's a place we keep coming back to.

We try to spend at least 2 months a year here because we just love the work-life balance and the weather.

When it's sunny, it's great and when rains it pours (and then comes a rainbow)!

Before you go, make sure to join the digital nomad communities on Slack and WhatsApp.

You can do that through the official digital nomad site for Madeira: https://digitalnomads.startupmadeira.eu/

✅ Go here if…

  • You like sunny weather

  • You love the outdoors

❌ Avoid here if…

  • You love big cities

  • You love sandy beaches. The beaches here consist more of rocks and rock pools.
